Freeview+ closes in on 1 million users

Freeview this week announced that it is closing in on the 1 million-user mark for its Freeview + certified range of Freeview Recorders.

Freeview’s Managing Director, IIse Howling, added “The popularity of the Freeview+ isn’t surprising given that it offers outstanding value – giving the same experience as ‘+’ recorders from other providers, the only difference is it’s free from subscription.”

Sales of the Freeview + boxes have more-than doubled since December 2007 – a 118% increase to be exact. This figure was helped significantly in the last quarter of 2008 with 26% of all boxes sold in this period. Throughout December 2008, the equivalent of 2 Freeview Recorder boxes were sold every minute in the UK.

The report from Freeview states that 17.2million homes are now enjoying the free services offered by Freeview, with the number set to increase with the current economic downturn seeing more and more people staying in to watch digital tv. Freeview + saves viewers more than £200 in the first year alone compared to subscription based alternatives. It is thought that many people plan to reduce subscriptions with pay tv providers and turn to non-subscription services such as Freeview and Freeview PVRs in 2009.

Freeview continued to highlight the launch of additional channels to the Freeview service in 2009 – CNN International has already launched and broadcasts from 9pm til 1am daily, with Discovery Networks UK scheduled to launch shortly.
